Even though we were in like surfer heaven, I had to keep reminding myself that I was there in Santos for a purpose. Yes and that reason was to teach a career workshop to the people of São Vicente (a neighboring island city of Santos) And so Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night Anders and I were busy instructing a group of about 9 individuals about interview techniques and other skills necessary to find a job. Our group this time around was another mixture of a lot of different ages and personalities. For instance, we had three teenagers and another 3 very experienced business men. One of the business men told the story of how he found his jobs, which I thought was pretty fascinating. This man took the phone book and looked up a list of about 10 companies and called the CEO of each company to request an interview. Whatever he did something about him caught the attention of these CEO's because at least three of these CEO's accepted. And although he only went to work for only one of the companies at the time, he eventually ended up working for all three of the companies because of his initial contact. It goes to show that initiative and bravery is always rewarded in some way. With this group we gave especially the youth plenty of time to present themselves and practice speaking in front of everyone. Although some of the presentations were shaky at first they improved as we fine tuned their nonverbal communication and as they practiced. I was pretty happy that one of older men we taught that was in search of a job, applied the principles that we taught him on Tuesday and by Thursday wasn't able to come because he had a job interview scheduled! Even though the career workshop may seem a little mundane and simple, the principles that they teach are all true and almost always work. On Thursday night we concluded what would be our second to last career workshop that we would teach in Brazil!
