Besides helping Jozzi teach some more career workshops at the employment center on monday and tuesday, Anders and I were pretty busy the last week of February visiting other friends of Stêffani.
Eduardo Correa
Eduardo is a lawyer who agreed to meet us to do our interview. Although his office was located in a small place I was pretty impressed with the way he maintained the image of his business. Everything in his office the water, chairs, waiting room had a really refined look to it. For Eduardo this was his 4th year heading his own law firm. Although growing quickly, his business would be considered a small business (PP pequena porte) based on the company's revenue. His main difficulty like Fabiana (hair dresser), was finding qualified workers that would be part of a successful work team. Eduardo mentioned that workers often demand high benefits and often time raises. The problem though with offering raises in salaries is that government taxes on employees are very high. Say if you were to pay your employee 50 in salary the government would require almost the same amount in taxes. Most of the money returns to the employee in some form of health or other benefit (but not always). And so if an employer doubles the salary of his employee he would be in fact doubling the amount of taxes he pays to the government. One of the things he said that he would change if he could go back and redo things would be to create a business plan from the beginning. At the beginning he said that administrative problems with managing the office and employees distracted him from giving more attention to the financial area of his business. One advice he gave to Anders and I (if we were to start our own business) was to research plenty about the type of business that we want to go into. Taking that advice to heart we thanked him for his time and ended the interview.
