After one our career workshops our English speaking friend Peter invited us to go to his Jujitsu club. Although Jujitsu is sport with a Japanese origin, it has become very popular in Brazil. For example, many of the best Jujitsu fighters in the world are Brazilian. When we arrived at the club there were very few, but with time others trickled in until there were at least 12. Peter told us that it was etiquette to always greet the jujitsu members in order of seniority or rank. Our teacher turned out to be a young but buff 30 year old with a huge tattoo on his shoulder. I found out later that he would be fighting in Las Vegas in another couple of months in an MMA fight. Based on his appearance and his gung-ho fighting moves I wouldn't doubt that he would win too! The training began with some simple running/jogging exercises and then followed with stretches. Eventually he had also line up and in turn were to accomplish some simple arm locks on our opponents. For Anders it must have been a piece of cake (because of his former wrestling experience), but for me it was breaking new ground. I had no idea what I was doing. Fortunately, the guys there were pretty patient with me and taught me some good techniques. After a while it was full on jujitsu where the winner stayed and looser got back in line. Let's just say that I was in the line a lot! I have to admit though my first experience with fighting Brazilian jujitsu was pretty fun although I did feel very sore afterwards. Since BYU has a jujitsu club it's something I'll consider doing in the future!
